VILLAMMARE
The
seaside town of Villammare is Vibonati’s natural “marina”.
The village appeared on the map around the beginning of the last
century when the few small fishermen’s homes, clustered
around the church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo and the 16th century
watch tower, suddenly found themselves in the company of the summer
residences of wealthy families from the surrounding hill towns.
Today, small fishermen’s cottages and expensive villas alternate
along the tree lined sea front. The village has excellent beaches,
running along most of its entire east to west extension.
Over the last ten years or so, thanks to an enormous increase
in the summer season tourist population, the village has grown
significantly towards the hinterland.
